The Ancient Ruins of Athens

Dive into the history of Ancient Greece by visiting the heart of it all -- Athens. The city is filled with historical landmarks dating back to the 5th century BC and many sculptures, vases and jewelry that have been well preserved. If you are trying to get the most out of this ancient city, here are the places you MUST visit:

Acropolis

Behold the center of all the ancient ruins. This large hill is the most well-known site in all of Athens. It is a bit of a hike, but it is well worth it. Bring water and be prepared to witness a view of the city that will take your breath away. Even at night, Acropolis does not disappoint.

Parthenon

The Parthenon is known for its white marble columns and a sense of proportion. You thought white marble is cool now? Just wait until you see how it is used on this majestic building. Definitely try to go early because the lines can get as massive as the structure itself.

Temple of Hephaestus

This ancient temple is one of the only temples that is almost completely preserved. It is dedicated to Hephaestus, god of the forge, and is surely fit for a Greek god. You can’t walk inside the temple, but you are able to walk around and marvel at an ancient structure that is almost fully intact.

Erechtheion

This unique structure is the second largest temple on the Acropolis. When you arrive, look for its famous Porch of the Caraytis. The porch includes statues of maidens on one side notable columns on the other.

Temple of Athena Nike

This temple may be small, but it is filled with history. It is the earliest iconic building on the Acropolis. Made for the goddess of victory, the temple displays artwork that illustrates the Greek battles against the Barbarians and the Boeotians.
