Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse

First McQueen Exhibit Ever on the West Coast

The late Lee Alexander McQueen had a reputation for controversy in the fashion world, but many of his colleagues and those in the fashion media considered this “enfant terrible,” to have had the kind of modern genius very few others possessed. He dressed many celebrities – among them Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, Rihanna and Sandra Bullock.

McQueen took his own life on Feb. 11, 2010 at the age of 40 after becoming despondent over the death of his beloved mother whose funeral was planned for the next day. He had struggled with mental health issues for years and according to his psychiatrist, had twice taken drug overdoses.

He was born in London’s East End in 1970 – the son of a cabbie – and trained in Saville Row in a place that made suits for Prince Charles. He later admitted to embroidering a profanity in the lining of one of the prince’s suits.

McQueen’s designs were riveting both conceptually and technically. His collections always garnered critical acclaim for proficient tailoring and dressmaking. He used references from the media, geography and technology to create fashion pieces that doubled as wearable art. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is having the first McQueen exhibition ever held on the west coast and it is a must-see for all fashion aficionados. Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse investigates the late designer’s work, his imagination, artistic process and marriage of fashion and art. This is certainly primed to be one of the most well-attended LA arts’ events.

Whisk Her Away

Select McQueen garments from the Collection of Regina J. Drucker will be displayed alongside artworks largely from LACMA’s permanent collection. Mind, Mythos, Muse would be an ideal exhibition to take a fashion-forward woman to as part of a Mother's Day gift. Better yet, you could thoroughly delight her with an LA getaway where she could get in some retail therapy on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
