Hang Your Yuletide Stockings on Magical Moskito Island
The British Virgin Islands is home to one of the world’s most prestigious destinations – Moskito Island and this exclusive 125-acre slice of paradise, owned by Sir Richard Branson, can be the setting for a spectacular Christmas vacation with your loved ones this year.
Moskito Island sits just two miles across the Caribbean from its famous sister island, Necker, so while you’re celebrating the holidays, you might want to sail on over to Branson’s first island for a visit.
The only guests in sight on Moskito Island will be those in your immediate party unless you decide to visit the communal beach complete with oceanfront loungers, a floating trampoline, and bartenders eager to serve, or the Beach House, a community recreational area where you can play a round of tennis and mingle with estate owners often including Branson himself.
Here is an inkling of what you will experience on this private, elite Christmas getaway:
Cuisine and Beverages
One of the great things about this island is not having a set dining menu. You will be asked about your food preferences before you arrive and a chef will create a personalized menu for all three meals. Want Thai one night and Italian another? They’re on it. The culinary team has even been known to fly in specific ingredients to suit a guest’s tastes.
Activities
Moskito Island is a playground for a myriad of activities on land or water. From kite surfing to stargazing and sunbathing to paddle-boarding – there’s something for everyone. If you are an avid nature lover, you will be enamoured by the island’s ring-tailed lemur colony, some of which will climb on you searching for treats. If, on the other hand, partying is more to your liking, you will enjoy nights to remember dancing to tunes spun by the island’s in-house DJ. There is also a recreation area home to an enormous infinity pool, a soothing hot-tub, table tennis, and a fully-equipped gym. If you’re so inclined, you can either choose to explore the island on foot or grab a bike to ride around. Take to the seas with a wide choice of watersports activities including kite surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, sailing and snorkeling.
You might also want to try out a Hobie Cat, a small catamaran with a mesh hull. Sail it to Manchioneel Beach, where the clear, warm, cerulean water beckons a dip. Should you opt to charter a yacht, the other British Virgin Islands are also at your disposal.
Wonderful for Families
Since you will have total privacy on your Christmas vacation that means you’re free to do whatever you want to do when you want to do it. So, if your children would love to splash around in the pool in the early morning hours, they can do so. In addition, there is staff dedicated to pampering even the youngest travelers. Your children will appreciate movie nights, making s’mores by a campfire, and scavenger hunts that will keep them entertained. Child minding services are also available if you want some downtime.

Day Trips
Moskito Island is just a short boat ride away from BVI gens like Tortola, Guana Island, Scrub Island, Peter Island and Jost Van Dyke, among others. If you’d like to explore some of these other islands, it’s easily arranged. There are some marvelous restaurants. Here are a couple on Jost Van Dyke we recommend:
Soggy Dollar Bar
A veritable institution, the Soggy Dollar Bar pulls the crowd like no other. On White Bay, this eatery turns into a truly romantic destination during the evenings, adorned with beautiful candles. Owner and head chef of this venerable restaurant and bar does not prefer to be predictable with his food, as the entree and appetizer selections are changed every week and presented with a local flourish. The restaurant has an eclectic menu with an emphasis on fresh ingredients prepared with a local twist. Their painkiller ice cream, modeled after their famous painkiller cocktail, is certainly worth a try.
Harris’ Place
Located on the Little Harbor beach strip, Harris’ Place is quiet and intimate. The owner is an affable woman who is always up for a conversation with her patrons while recommending the best from the menu dominated by seafood preparations, with the lobster prepared in a velvety garlic butter sauce being a choice pick. Among desserts, their unique interpretation of key lime pie is worth every holiday calorie. The restaurant has a schedule for live music.
