Malibu is the Hamptons of Los Angeles. It has achieved near legendary status among California beach towns. Hollywood stars and top athletes live in many of the oceanfront homes here on elegant miles of beach. With the hills and the sea, outdoor activities abound. Hikers will appreciate the miles of canyon trails and water sports enthusiasts can surf, paddleboard and go kayaking.
Malibu is about much more than surfing. When visiting, you might want to investigate these five possibilities:
Hike the Mishe Mokwa Trail
The Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak is something rare trail hikers can do over and over and never tire of. This trail will highlight new and different aspects of a route that has a little something for everyone. Getting to the peak is a challenge but absolutely doable. When you get to the top after having trekked more than six miles, it will be worth it. The awe-inspiring mountains and coastline will unfurl before your eyes.
Malibu Pier
The Malibu Pier is a great draw. Whether a sunny day or a cool, dark evening, the pier has so much to offer in the way of landscapes, culinary experiences, and distractions. Whether watching locals fish, staring at the twinkling lights in the mountains at night, feasting on delicious food at the eateries, or viewing the memorabilia (this is where the original 60s film Gidget! was shot) in the gift shop, time at the pier is well spent.
Depart Foundation Art Gallery
Contemporary artists departing from what they’ve done in the past are given the support of the Depart Foundation Art Gallery through exhibitions, discussions and the production of art. For instance, the gallery has featured the paintings of LA-based artist Joey Wolf; tiny tsunami, a video featuring the work of artist and architect Theo Triantafyllidis and an exhibition featuring 44 artists whose works lie in the intersection of art and surfing.
Wine Safari
If you’re a wine connoisseur, you might indulge yourself by going on a wine safari. You’ll explore the 1,000-acre Saddlerock Ranch and vineyards in Malibu and tour the lush orchards in an open-air safari vehicle. Stops will be made so you can take in the perfect scenery, taste some local wines and get up close and personal with some of the animals living on the ranch: Zebra, water buffalo, alpaca, bison and Stanley, the film star giraffe who had a role in the film, Hangover 3. In fact, most of the animals on the ranch are retired from years of being in films.
Malibu is one of the loveliest parts of Southern California and your stay will be equally as lovely when you choose to stay at Villa Yetta – one of the most stunning of California luxury homes. Villa Yetta’s contemporary styling is the epitome of high fashion and elegance. With an expansive interior, a heated outdoor pool and an indoor hot tub, this home is primed for lavish entertaining.
The Getty Villa

This is a unique experience offering ancient Greek and Roman art, tranquil gardens, and ocean breezes. The Getty Villa strives to inspire human understanding through visual art and cultural heritage. This outing is ideal for children as well.
